Hammer is my absolute favourite of the hard-boiled school of writing. The main lesson that I took from his writing style was that it was bare-bones. It's a style that even Hemingway borrowed from. A 1930s copy of "Red Harvest", huh? That's fantastic!

DeleteI do not know about the book, but it sure looks like the electric bill was very much simpler back in 1935.
ReplyDeleteLove the bill. As Bill (no relation) said, the paperwork was strikingly simpler back then. Today we are drowning in information and infected by it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, they didn't mess around back then with all that info about daily useage, and ways to pay your bill.
