tram-cast and Portland wrap-up

As you can see, when I opened the case, I umped the ribbon selector to "stencil" and had to retype the line.  I had to hurry - it was only a 3 minute trip.  Here are some views from the tram:

And here are the books I found at Powell's:
And this is an awesome display they had up:

This Goodwill superstore was just off the bike trail:
 They had some nice stuff:
Including a typewriter with a really good ribbon:

Bond Day extensions

Bond laughed. "When I'm...er...concentrating," he explained, "I never have more than one drink before dinner. But I do like that one to be large and very strong and very cold and very well-made. I hate small portions of anything, particularly when they taste bad. This drink's my own invention. I'm going to patent it when I can think of a good name."

reflections on Bond Day

I found a gif of the pistol mechanism on tumbler via Bing:

As wikipedia described the Kel-Tecs as " short-recoil operated" and the Walther as " blowback-operated," I figured the difference was important so I looked it up and I'm not sure how I'd apply it in fiction.  Interesting reading though.

Bond Day iii - Casino Locale

I suppose I could have saved up and made a visit to Monte Carlo, but after spending so much at the gun range in the afternoon, I was feeling impecunious that evening, so I just drove to the second-nearest casino to my home.

No, I didn't buy this.  On my way to the casino I came upon a goodwill 20 minutes before closing.  They had this late-model Olivetti and an Irish tweed jacket that was too small.  I left there empty-handed but with my meagre gaming stake intact.

Bond Day - Part II: The Firing Range

Thought to take a pic right before leaving

Believe it or not, I was trying to hit the other squares along the bottom and left.  I tried to stay off the right out of consideration for the next shooter.

Bond for a Day - Part I

I have been rereading the Bond novels in order lately and with all the activities involved that are far removed from my daily life, I thought it would help me get into "vacation mode" to have a Bond Day where I do a few of them.  Here's the first installment.

typed on Torpedo, for the exciting, dangerous-sounding name.

Sonny, I've lost more balls than you ever had!
typed on Olympia SM-3, for the proper 1950's cold-war feeling

I'll continue soon with the pistol range and the casino.

Other Things

I'm entering this text on my latest find - the Grail of computing.  I mean of course a Model M keyboard with real clicky keys!  It's just loud enough to swap in the next time someone complains about the typewriter noise.

And finally, here's my own Travel-Riter, with a Corsair for scale.  It's basket shift.  It's having a problem - the carriage is off the rails somehow, as if something came loose.  I've been meaning to see if anyone has suggestions but I need to get a more precise diagnosis and good pics.

Based on a true story

I have fictionalized my flight down to LAX to make the purpose a bit more interesting, and since my own name doesn't have a nice "fictional" sound to it, I casted about vainly for another.  obviously rule one was brevity but perhaps I need to prioritize "mouth feel" of names above brevity.

So yes, I did type on Virgin America again and realized later I was using the same typewriter again.

LAX next week - who wants a type-in?

Short bikecast on paper from my pocket (above).

Longer typecast originally planned for today (below).

The weekend in typewriters

view from the Swedish Cultural Center

Riding up the street, I saw a typewriter on a car tailgate and had to get a shot of it.  I like that it's on a "Matrix" too.
