This leads from the tab keys to the mechanism up the back.  It unhooks, presumably to swing out of the way to remove the carriage.

44 Magnum

The M44 model name, along with the struggle of hefting it, brings to mind the .44 Magnum of Dirty Harry.  So much so that the elite typeface seems out of scale to the giant carriage (which appears to be removable, but which I won't attempt until after NaNo.  As Harry might say, "But being as this is a 44 Magnum, the most powerful typewriter in the world, and would write your character's head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"

OCR is pretty good, on a par with the others, so I will definitely give this some work in November.

Uriel is closest, getting about 80% there.  It is indeed an Olivetti made in Great Britain.  While I was posting this, Richard guessed it in the previous post - well done!

typed on my first-ever typewriter, an Underwood standard from 1946

To start, this was my first post on 9/25/2010

I acquired a number of typewriters in short order, including two in Senatorial from Richard.

Looking for pics of typewriters, I discovered the Typewriter Brigade, and in that backwards way found NaNoWriMo.  2010 was my first attempt and I won with EXACTLY 50,000 words.

Does anyone else remember when Cows swept through the typosphere?

I designed the first International Typewriter Appreciation Month (April) commemorative stamp.  I think it can still be purchased.

mostly computers but they do have a few electric typewriters.

No sewing machines though.

I think it may be one of the few rubber dome models.  The web tells me so anyway.  But it works fine and has a better feel than either of the two that it's replacing
