With my script Lettera 32, I find that it requires at least the line-and-a-half setting. Otherwise, the type is too crowded. And like you, I marvel at the lack of an exclamation point. The apostrophe-period shorthand doesn't line up as neatly as a dedicated typeslug. I suppose that occasions appropriate for a script face are equally inappropriate for exclamations! and! interjections!
