radiogram for the typosphere

  1. I'm going to have to give Neuromancer another shot. I played a lot of Shadowrun (think futuristic, cyberpunk with magic, so very rooted in Gibson's work), but when I read it recently, I just wasn't wow'd.

Granted, I know that I read it out of context, because by the time I got my hands on it, I had been playing in the ground-breaking setting he created.

I'll have to pull it off my shelf and give it another go.

  2. It's funny how William Gibson started out with "Cyberpunk SF," which he more or less invented. Then the world rather caught up with him. Reality now is a lot weirder, if not quite so dark, as his earliest imaginings. His new books (Spook Country, Zero History) read like contemporary literature. The conflicts all seem mellow and low key, and by the end you're not quite sure what exactly in the world has changed, but it feels like it must be significant...

Try to put your mind back into the early 1980s before you start reading Neuromancer. It might make it easier to get it properly blown.
